All the Light We Cannot See

I just finished reading All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr. It’s a book that has been praised by many of my friends and I finally got around to reading it. Honestly, it was kinda hard to get into but eventually I sped through it. Though, that is not the point of this blog.

The point of this blog is, as I’m reading it, I can’t help but feel like we’re in a similar place. Not necessarily for me, but I kept thinking about all the people that are being detained at the border. And how is that different than the people being detained in the book? If I were a character in this book, who would I be? Would I be someone who fought to see change? Or would I be someone who saved my own skin?

When will I care enough to make changes? To do something? To live outside of myself?

I can see myself starting to wake up to the injustice, wanting to help, starting to take note. But, soon it will be too late. If I don’t jump in, I will be too late. It will get too bad. Too many children will die.

So, what am I going to do? Will I start to take action? Will I help my neighbor? Will I finally give away those gift cards I’ve had in my car for literal years to the homeless guy I see on the side of the road?

When will I get out of my own head? When will I be able to float long enough that I can actually help someone else?

Will I be too late? Will I be a person who stood by and did nothing?

Will I look for the light? Will I shine the light on others?

There will be a day where we will give account to all the things we did on this earth. What will my account be? Will I have clothed and fed and visited the poor and sick? Will I have clothed and fed and visited Jesus?

Anyway, it’s a good book if you stick it out. I’d recommend it.
