How do you save what you love?

How many times have people looked down on me after I brought up the urgency to save the planet?

“Save the planet, how rich!”

And they laughed and talked about how they were also utopian revolutionaries in their olden days. How you feel like you can do anything –save anything- when you are young and wild and free.

Then what?

Then life happens? And you realise you are not that powerful after all, and you have to face the facts and start earning money and give up on your stupid dreams?

You wake up and finally understand that nobody can be old, wild and free?

How do you save what you love?

We all have a safe place, somewhere we go to clear our mind –or rack our brains, depending on the need.

Mine is the forest.

Since as far as I can remember, trees have always fascinated me.

They are peaceful and alive, quiet and loud, still and wild.

But most of all, they are like us: they have arms and hands and veins.

These sleeping giants are like big brothers –older brothers- watching over us.

Sometimes I wonder how some people can’t see it.

How it is possible for them to spend a whole life on Earth without realising how divinely beautiful it is.

Our planet created the biggest miracles there are; it composed music, painted colours and grew tasty food.

Why look for gods in the sky when life comes directly from the ground?

Under our feet, below the layers of concrete and tarmac and pipes, is the beating heart that enabled our hearts to beat.

The Earth would be just fine without us –it would be better without us.

But we simply would not be without it.

In the Maori culture, the Earth is everything: survival, politics, myths and religion.

It is not just a part of life: it is life.

According to them, humans have the right to use its resources, but they also have the duty to protect them.
