American democracy is faltering

America prides itself on being a beacon of democracy in a troubled world. I was born in 1984, and for the majority of my adult life I’ve watched our country spread democratic ideals across the globe…

Erasing Sports Memories

We all have them. The moments we as fans will never forget. The “I remember where I was” memories that we will tell our grandchildren 40 years from now, remembering them like they occurred yesterday.

Back in 2011, when you were talking best players in the NBA, obviously LeBron was at the top of the list. One could make the easy case that the next spot belonged to Derrick Rose. Rose was coming off a season where he won the MVP award at 22 years old. We were watching the future of the NBA, and a reemergence of the Chicago Bulls.

The Bulls were the top seed in the East for the 2011–12 postseason, and faced the 76ers in the 1st Rd. Late in the 4th qtr of Game 1, Rose jump stopped in the lane and landed awkwardly. We all found out later it was a torn ACL, and Rose would miss not only the rest of the postseason, but the following season.

As many of you may not know, I am a huge Florida State football fan. In the 2001 Orange Bowl (my 4th season following the team), FSU was on a 3-game title game appearance streak, and Oklahoma was standing in their way of back-to-back title wins. Ok, simple enough. Heisman Trophy winner Chris Weinke and the squad (ranked in the top 3 of total offense and defense) will wipe the floor with these guys. We’re FSU.

Not exactly.

FSU managed to put up 2 points, which came on a safety…with 55 seconds left in the game. Some would say that was the beginning of the end for the FSU dynasty, as the 2000’s would later be known as The Lost Decade. A win here would for sure buy FSU a couple more years at the top of the game, and delay the downfall of Bobby Bowden’s legendary career.

This will be every Mets fan’s #1. Should be America’s #1, just because (ok I have no reason why, this one just really hurts).

The Mets won 97 games, tied with the Yankees for most in baseball. After sweeping the Dodgers in the NLDS, they faced off against the Cardinals in the NLCS. Of course, because nothing can be easy as a Mets fan, the series went to a Game 7.

Except that isn’t what happened. The Cardinals took the lead in the 9th (Mets bullpen, because of course), which meant the Mets needed a miracle. That miracle walked up to the plate with a 7-year/$119M contract, and the weight of a city on his shoulders. Carlos Beltrán was good for this. This was his moment. He was Mr. Postseason, guy had 8 HR and a 1.556 OPS in the 2004 postseason for the Astros. Adam Wainwright? Yea he can take him, this is a kid facing a man.
