Four ways to make your job as a manager more enjoyable

Is the daily grind of your job getting you down, and you’re not enjoying it? Try these four ideas to reclaim the fun.

1. Step Back from the Immediate Tasks.

Take some time, and find a quiet space, to think and reflect — objectively identify the high-payoff activities. These activities should be judged on the result — not on the action itself. Writing emails, for example, is often treated as a low-payoff activity, but when the email helps everyone on the team focus on one goal, it is undoubtedly a high payoff. So write it deliberately — don’t just produce a “stream of consciousness” that blurs the message.

2. Give jobs away.

The best leaders are undoubtedly the best delegators — make sure the jobs you give people the whole and meaningful task. Don’t keep all the good stuff for yourself. And please don’t get them to report unless they are in trouble. Develop the self-confidence to let them do the job. Delegating should not add to your workload, so delegate and forget until the results roll in — you have cleared the decks to do other things. Delegating is a development tool, and your people will love the trust, autonomy and growth.

3. Think in terms of months and weeks, not days and hours.

Go beyond a simple “to-do-list” and daily scheduling your activities. Instead, map out your month and the week ahead, making sure to schedule big chunks of time for items needing your full attention and creativity. Fit the rest around those. Do everything in your power to stick to the schedule. Anticipate and plan blocks of time for interruptions, and let people know when they can and cannot disturb you.

4. Get Results.

Help the entire team focus on the essential issues. Make it clear that activities will be judged on results, not progress reports. Outputs lead to outcomes — a report is seldom an outcome!! Make sure you and the team are clear on the outcomes wanted and the outputs needed to get there. And give them the support, resources and access needed to get the results.
