AKASHA Newbie Guide

What is AKASHA and why you should learn more on it

So let’s start !

This is like any other web application, but without server or physical company. Note the “D” in Dapps, meaning “decentralized” : it is using the Ethereum blockchain to bring you a new social network where everyone is a node.

You can create an identity, follow a person, publish an entry, comment, bookmark, vote, follow a tag, create a tag like any other social network. His main goal is to provide a way where freedom of expression online and privacy are not outsourced to corporations.

This is AKASHA, a new social network based on blockchain technology.

The first blog post of AKASHA on the 30 September 2016 was announcing the pre-alpha on October 2016. By the day of 16 January 2017 (1A.E. , or 1 year After Ethereum), AKASHA reached the functional alpha. They are in a continuous experimentation because they put a huge effort on creating something great and with respect on the human rights.

Announcing the beta version opened on the 14th November 2017. During the past ten months they have been focusing on the following:

(cf sources at New Horizons)

The CEO, Mihai Alisie, has been since 2011 creating with the well known Vitalik Butrin the world’s first Bitcoin centric publication Bitcoin Magazine. In 2013, he followed Vitalik in founding the Ethereum project. From 2015, he is focusing on making his dream AKASHA coming true.

As a social media network, you can create an identity, follow a person, publish an entry, comment, bookmark, vote, follow a tag, create a tag like any other social network. Also, from the v0.40.0 the The Tipping Point is available, sending AETH (Akasha Ethereum) to reward someone for a post, sharing with the community. You can edit posts, versioning them, see the latests entries from a main flow coming in the network. Commenting in threads and reply any comment, receive notifications, mute notifications, etc. There is a full list of capacity you can do with it.

Some concepts are already on the platform like AETH (ERC20 Compatible Token), MANA (Regenerable Crypto Fuel), ESSENCE (Consume for AETH) and KARMA (Proto Reputation).

You are able to create an article, post it with tags. To add a new tags you will have to get a better karma to add them. Create some dashboards to gather informations by interests and add some columns to track tags / people talking, even make your own free lists !

My opinion

I will tell in this section my opinion on it despite my lake of experimentations (not more than 2 weeks). The global idea sounds really great and promising : I track a lot of things in my developer’s life like technology, tutorials, crypto and blockchain things and I’ve never seen something like this before. I’m quite enthusiastic on this project still in beta.
I think you should make your own experiment with the product and you shall miss something not trying it.

For now, it’s a bit hard for a complete blockchain / crypto newbie to dive in. If you do have a bit of experience creating a wallet, doing some transactions and security on the subject you should definitely check the product. If not, go on Medium find articles, posts, just start learning it because it’s not tomorrow’s technology, it’s live.

One more thing, when you create an AKASHA account, you will be credited by 1 ETH (~1000 AETH) on Rinkeby test network allowing you to test the tipping feature, AETH flow and transactions on the beta version.

Because I’m no expert, I may have made some mistakes, that’s why I will ask you to tell me what is wrong in comments in order to make it right.

Thank you for reading !
