The Marvelous World of Mrs. Maisel

ENTERTAINMENT

I have loved this show since it first premiered on March 17th, 2017 on Amazon Prime Video. Watching the trailer and witnessing a female-led story was an instant sell for me. And, let’s be honest who doesn’t love Anthony Marc Shalhoub who plays Mrs. Maisel’s dad Abe Weissman on the show. I still re-watch his Monk series now and then.

I was shocked & hooked from the very beginning with the costumes, the decorations, the rapid fire dialogue, and the jokes! It was a dream on a screen. And then Miriam Maisel (Rachel Elizabeth Brosnahan) files in owning her space and starting a new life as a newlywed. I might provide some spoilers from the first episode so beware!

The series is based in the late 1950s, an era that I’ve always been intrigued by from watching my maternal grandmother's wedding photos, her engagement dresses, the hats that Conchita would wear for events — the corsets… not that I think these were nice or comfortable, but you get what I’m saying.

In the show, Midge — Miriam’s nickname — is a devoted Upper West Side of Manhattan housewife who dedicates her time to supporting her husband and taking care of her two children. Her husband Joel Maisel, played by Michael Jonathan Zegen, is giving stand-up comedy a try — mostly as a hobby you could say — due to his love for the craft. He begins to test the waters every once in a while in the evenings at comedy clubs. Let’s remember that Midge was always there supporting him and encouraging him to keep going.

Unfortunately for Joel, he lacked the raw talent and quick wits to lift up his dream on his own so he resorted to the age old practice of plagiarism. He created his jokes and content by copying other already famous or known comedian’s work. After Midge finds out what he had been doing she advises him to use his own material because that’s more unique and creates transparency with the audience.

He sort of follows her lead and one night while using his own material, he completely bombs. Terribly. Surprise, surprise — when they get home later that evening Joel gets into an argument with Midge and puts all the blame on her shoulders. I saw it coming, I trusted him too soon.
