A Simple Trick to Avoid Overestimating How Much You Can Do

Unpacking could be the key to eliminating the planning fallacy.

My dad abruptly stormed into my room and just stopped and stared at me. We eyeballed each other for at least 10 seconds, waiting for the other person to speak. “Aren’t you forgetting something?” he suddenly said. I paused for a moment trying to think about what I was supposed to do. “The garage!” he said. I confidently replied with “Oh that! I’ll do it. It won’t take me long, relax.” You see, what I thought was going to take me an hour actually took me the whole day.

The classic situation that I faced was having an assignment set by my lecturer with the deadline in a few weeks. “Easy. I’ll get this done within two weeks and be chilled,” I used to think to myself. The reality was that it never went like this. I always found myself cramming. I would repeatedly send questions to my lecturer hoping they’d reply quickly. And, I would stay awake till the early hours of the morning trying to complete it. Sound familiar to any of you?

The annoying part is that I always dismiss the person who tells me it’s going to take a while. I start the task and quickly wish that I started earlier. When the other person is standing over me saying “I told you so,” I just feel like a fool.
