Authenticity in Casting Puts Last Actor Out of Work

The entertainment industry, most notably Hollywood, has a long history of casting crimes, including whitewashing ethnic roles and selecting melanin-deficient faces to play people of color. From vaudevillian blackface to casting John Wayne as Genghis Khan in The Conquerers and Emma Stone as a Polynesian woman in the all-too-forgettable film Aloha, history is rife with examples.

Thankfully, an awakening around this issue occurred in the early 21st century, with the shift to washout whitewashing taking full force in 2018.

Now, after two decades of evolution towards authentic casting in Hollywood, we can celebrate our national success on this front.

2035 marks the first year in history when every single film, tv show, and theater role featured 100% authentic casting!

This means that not one white person played a person of color! Not one able-bodied person played someone physically unique! Not one British person played an American! And not one plumber played an electrician!

It’s amazing how far we’ve come as a nation!

To think that only twenty years ago a doctor could have been cast in the role of a nurse, taking that role from a real nurse who would have played the role with greater understanding and bona fide chops.

While we still had a 16 year old Canadian man play the role of a 17 year old Canadian man in this year’s 6th generation reboot of Spider Man, we should still be proud of the racial, gender, national, and occupational legitimacy accomplished in entertainment casting this year.

Inevitably, the social demand for genuine casting has led to there being no actual actors left, as people can only play roles that they embody in real life, but many people on both sides of the political spectrum have hailed this as an unforeseen victory for society.

No longer do we have to pretend Jennifer Lawrence’s quirky personality is cute or that Matt Damon has any theatrical range. Instead, only those who inhabit the actual role in real life may depict their experience on film — meaning no one can critique any performance, because it’s their own damn experience! Plus, we rarely see the same actor twice!

Of course, all progress has its detractors. Some backwards naysayers have decried Hollywood recycling the same old hackneyed plots of failed actors waiting tables and throwing away their lives on cocaine — a narrative trend that‘s gained prominence since our national awakening in the arts — but no one criticizes the authentic casting and moral rectitude of this work.

I’m so proud that America still retains the liberal dreams of complete and utter equality that possessed our founding fathers to create this country. It’s a great time to be alive!
