Start Your 2020 Goals Now

Set the right goals and get started.

Did you know that 80% of all new years resolutions fail? That means a majority of people who set out to accomplish a goal at the beginning of the year will inevitably fail. This happens for a multitude of reasons, yet the thing that continually sticks out to me is that often people aren’t setting the right goals.

Some people get this crazy idea that they are going to run a 5k in the next year when they haven’t run down the block in at least two years (that was me a few years ago…update, still haven’t run that 5k). Some people want to get out of debt but they haven’t sat down and taken a practical look at their budget.

We are hitting a new decade and a new year. This means we get this tremendous opportunity to track and plan for what we want the next ten years of our lives to look like. Ten years from now I’ll be 35. That scares me because at 25 I feel like I am still just getting started and don’t know where I want to go.

Maybe you are in that place right now. What tends to happen when we lead from a fear centered place or place of trying to impress others with our goals is that we quickly lose motivation. I believe that the reason 80% of new years resolutions fail is that people have the wrong motivation.

One of my goals for the next ten years is to buy a house. I want to accomplish this not because I want to impress people with the kind of house I buy but that I want to move to a place where I can be somewhere permanently. For the past five years of my life, I have largely been nomadic with how I move around and bounce from thing to thing. I don’t want that for the next ten years of my life. Thus, out of my desire for myself to find a sense of stability and permanence I have the goal to buy a house.
